Can double side-by-side strollers be gate-checked at airports?
Hi,
I’m doing my research before buying a Double Stroller. Our best option so far seems to be the Bumbleride Twin Indie, a side-by-side 29″ wide and 20 lbs. weight.
Does anybody knows if this kind of stroller is allowed inside the airports? I mean, to go through the security check points and have it checked at the gate without issues.
With recent changes in security and gate-check allowances I’m not sure if we’ll have problems when traveling.
I’ll appreciate your comments. Thank you in advance.
I was a Flight Attendant for 13 years and I saw some pretty massive strollers being gate-checked.
I personally, found it easier to fly with only one stroller and a good baby carrier. I have three kids just over 2 years apart. I fly transatlantics about twice a year.
You want to check with your airline but usually any stroller which folds is accepted. Only if you are flying on a really tiny prop plane or perhaps charter could this be an issue.
Most airport security operations will do a “hand check” of any items that wont fit through the X-ray machine. This is what is done with wheelchairs.
Look out for any “family” lanes at security in some airports and if not, families are often pulled out of the regular line and sent through the handicapped one if not too busy. You could even ask but don’t just head there on your own.
I highly recommend that you “strip down” your stroller as much as is reasonably possible before flying. You don’t need the sunshade in the airport and can live without the cup holders.
Since this is new stroller, make sure you’re comfortable with it before leaving, especially folding and opening it. Don’t be fumbling with it at the airport. Usually I recommend using a bungee cord to double-secure a stroller. See if this will work on yours’. Most latches are flimsy and if your stroller pops open en route, it could get damaged. Bring a bag for your stroller but the gate-check tag needs to be visible (so figure out how you’ll do this). Make sure to put your address, etc. somewhere on the stroller in case the gate-check tag gets lost.
I still recommend having at least one good baby carrier (good ones go at least to age 2 or 3, forget bjorns and other front packs!) You may still need it in the airport. If you are flying internationally, especially to Europe or the Middle East, you may not see your stroller until baggage claim at your destination (they’re not returned to the jetway on layovers).
So comb over your airlines’ website one more time before buying but so many families fly with really large strollers and no problems, you should be fine.
